Image-#1 is for the algorithm, images 2–5 are for the buyer different jobs, different photo rules, and most sellers waste the slot that decides visibility

In short

Image #1 is what Vinted’s visual-match algorithm reads. Images 2 to 5 are what the buyer reads. Different jobs. Most sellers put their prettiest flat-lay at slot 1 and lose visibility because of it.

Vinted's algorithm uses image #1 as the visual-match input for two surfaces: the 'similar items' carousel that appears at the bottom of every listing, and the visual-search results when a buyer uploads a photo to find something similar. The other photos in the listing — slots 2, 3, 4, 5 — are not used by the algorithm. They're used by the buyer once they've already tapped through to your listing.

So image #1 has one job — get the listing into the algorithm's visual-similarity orbit of items the buyer is already looking at — and images 2-5 have a different job — convert the buyer once they've arrived. Most sellers put their prettiest flat-lay at slot 1 because flat-lays look tidy and editorial. The algorithm's visual-match then surfaces the listing next to other flat-lays.

But the conversion rate on listings with a model shot at slot 1 is meaningfully higher than on flat-lay-first listings, because the model shot answers the buyer's first question — 'how does this look on a person?' — in the thumbnail itself rather than burying the answer at slot 3. The fix is to reorder the photos with the algorithm and the buyer in mind separately. Slot 1: the photo that best represents the item the algorithm should match you to — a model shot if you have one, a hanger shot if not, the flat-lay only as a fallback.

The fix is to reorder the photos with the algorithm and the buyer in mind separately.

Slot 2: the full-length view that shows scale and silhouette. Slot 3: a close-up of the fabric texture or pattern. Slot 4: a close-up of the brand tag or care label.

Slot 5: any flaw, defect, or measurement detail. The slot-1 reorder costs nothing — it's a drag-and-drop in the upload flow — and it tends to lift visibility by 30 to 50 per cent on the same listing without any other change. VintSnap doesn't reorder photos for you — that's a human judgement on what represents the item best — but knowing which slot does which job is the part most sellers don't realise.
